Getting married on Korčula
A practical guide to planning a wedding on my island: the legal steps for foreign couples, when to come, where to marry, how guests arrive, and how far ahead to begin. Written from years of running weddings here.
Can foreign couples legally marry on Korčula?
Yes. Foreign couples can hold a civil marriage anywhere in Croatia, and it is recognised back home. The paperwork is the heavy part, so many couples marry legally in their own country first and then hold a relaxed symbolic ceremony on the island. I plan either route, and I handle the administration for you.
For a civil marriage you gather a few documents in your home country. Each one has to be issued 3 to 6 months before the wedding date and translated into Croatian, so start collecting them 4 to 6 months ahead.
I submit everything to the registry office (matični ured) on Korčula in person, book your appointments, and collect the official confirmations, so nothing is left to chance on the day.
For a Catholic ceremony I coordinate with the island parish offices and the Diocese of Dubrovnik, and I settle the details with your officiating priest. The same home-country documents apply, along with the certificate the registrar issues.
- A birth certificate extract
- Proof of identity and citizenship
- A certificate of free marital status
- Confirmation that the marriage will be recognised in your home country
What does a wedding on Korčula cost?
My planning fee starts at €800 and scales with how much you hand over: full planning from the first idea, partial planning if you have already begun, or day-of coordination for the wedding itself.
The full celebration budget depends on your guest count, the venue, the season, and how much has to be brought to the island. I share indicative ranges privately once I understand your plans, so the figure fits your day rather than a generic package.
Choosing local suppliers usually costs less than importing a team from the mainland, and it tends to run more smoothly because everyone already knows the island.
When is the best time of year to marry on Korčula?
May, June, and early July, then September and early October. Temperatures are mild, the island is calm, and the light is at its best for photographs.
I would avoid late July and August. It is too hot for a comfortable outdoor ceremony, the island is crowded, and transfers and parking get harder. A summer wedding is still possible; it just takes more planning around the heat and the crowds.
Where can you actually get married on Korčula?
The settings I plan most often are seaside ceremonies, small ceremonies in the stone streets of Korčula Old Town, and hidden coves on the nearby islands of Badija and Vrnik.
Konoba Maha is one option among these: an intimate venue for roughly 30 to 60 guests, with authentic island cooking and complete privacy in nature. I walk you through each location and match it to the day you have in mind.
How do guests get to Korčula, and where do they stay?
Most guests fly into Split and take a fast catamaran straight to Korčula, or fly into Dubrovnik and drive up the Pelješac peninsula to the short ferry between Orebić and Korčula.
Island travel rewards early booking. Ask your guests to reserve catamaran tickets well ahead in the summer season, when seats sell out.
For where everyone sleeps, I usually suggest a private villa with a pool for the couple and close family, and private accommodation in Korčula town for the rest of the party. To keep the service at a premium level, I coordinate weddings of up to around 80 guests.
How far ahead should you start planning?
Eight to twelve months. On a small island the exclusive locations and the best accommodation book out quickly, so an early start gives you a real choice of dates and venues rather than what is left over.
Who will you be working with on the island?
Over years of running events here I have built a team of local professionals I trust: photographers, videographers, florists, hairstylists, DJs, a saxophonist, and both official and symbolic registrars.
They know Korčula, they follow current styles, and they adapt to what you want. Because they are already on the island, the results are better and the cost is lower than flying a team in from the mainland.
Legal requirements and costs change, and they vary by country. I confirm the current details for your nationalities and dates before anything is booked.
